UC San Diego's Fashion Quarterly Magazine is a student-run publication that explores all avenues of media(fashion, film, music, etc). Each semi-quarterly publication is released among students. As a Graphic Designer, I am tasked with working directly with the writers to translate their conceptual frameworks into layout designs for their pieces. I am responsible for layout design, typography, and photo editing.
The Show will go on - Fall 2020
People Problems and constraints:
How might we translate the writer's exploration of runway shows and set design seamlessly into a magazine layout?
How can we expose new readers to the world of fashion design without compromising key information?
- 10-week timeframe
- Full issue to be released in May
- Designs have to be cohesive with the whole issue
Pain points and collaboration
How might the writer and I combine our ideas for the layout?
How might we make final decisions together?
How might my own biases be affecting my design?
- Combining powerful visuals with dense text
- What font might represent the piece titled "The Show Will Go On"
- Reaching our demographic of college students
Some may not have knowledge of the fashion industry vocabulary
Iterations
Our initial vision was to come up with a bright and inviting design that contrasted both runway and set design. I began with making a moldboard with our color, type, and aesthetic ideas and then began with layout ideas.
As the writer continued to write her article, she decided that a starker and collage design would better suit the project. There were many iterations with layouts including simple images versus cutout models and text placements.
How might I justify the importance of a pull quote, without sacrificing readability for the users?
Final Deliverables
Next Steps
- How might I further explore the contrast of the pull quote in relation to the text?
- Is there a better way to block out the dense text, so that it is less strain on the reader?
- How might I identify my own design biases, while tapping into the writer's vision for their piece?
- Conducting user research outside of our organization to gain more insights
